What it's actually like
Pounda is a sandy beach on the south-west coast of Paros, looking straight across the channel to Antiparos, about ten minutes by car from Parikia. The Antiparos ferry leaves from the little port at Pounda, a short walk from the beach and the kite schools. The shoreline is long and shallow with a sandy bottom, and the water is a clear turquoise.
The Meltemi blows side-shore along the beach, and the schools describe it as constant and steady. In the record, June to September are the Meltemi months, with around half to three in five days clearing 12 knots for three daylight hours or more, and July the pick at 59 per cent. The mean over those rideable hours sits between 16 and 17 knots. The wind builds through the morning: in July a quarter of days are windy at 8am and more than half by early afternoon. February reads almost as windy in the record, but the schools open from April to October.
The ferry to Antiparos runs about every 45 minutes from the port, a short walk from the beach.
