What it's actually like

Foil from the main beach in front of the schools, over choppy water and small waves. From May to September a lighter south-south-west of 12 to 20 knots gives foil and wing weather, and Surfpoint and C2Sky rent wing gear.

Xin chào (hello) from Mui Ne, a beach town on the south-east coast of Vietnam, about 20 km from Phan Thiet. Most of the kite stations sit on one stretch of sand in Ham Tien, along the beach road, Nguyen Dinh Chieu. The kite beach faces south and runs more than a kilometre, with a sandy bay for teaching. This is not a flat-water spot: expect chop in the lighter morning wind, and a shore break builds as the wind does.

The north-east monsoon, gió mùa (the monsoon wind) to the locals, is the season, from November to March. In those months at least seven days in ten clear 12 knots for three daylight hours or more, and February is the pick at nearly nine in ten. The wind builds through the day: fewer than one January day in five is windy at 8am, against more than eight in ten from 2pm on. It runs cross-shore to cross-onshore on the main beach. October is the quietest month.

That afternoon build decides the quiver. Riders go out on 10 or 12 metre kites in the morning, then drop to 9 or 7 metres later. The dry season runs at 18 to 30 knots, with gusts up to 40. Bring an all-terrain twin-tip with comfortable footstraps and two freeride kites. A February afternoon here is reliably powered up.

May to September is the summer season, with a lighter southerly breeze of 12 to 20 knots from the south-south-west, which is foil, wing and freestyle weather. July and August hold up at about eight days in ten, so the off season is not a dead one. The sea sits at around 20 to 25°C from November to March, so no wetsuit is needed, though a rash vest helps on a long day.

Ganh Beach, on the east side of the peninsula, gets the smoothest wind and builds well-spaced waves; stay clear of the rocky headland. Suoi Nuoc, the next bay, has similar waves, for advanced riders. Malibu, a 15 to 20 minute drive away through the resorts, is the wave spot, which suits wave riding but not learning. Harbour Wall, about 20 minutes south, is the one flat-water option, best early, before the wind shifts around 1pm. Turtle Island, 45 minutes north, funnels the wind between an islet and the dunes.

Rules and safety. At high tide a big shore dump breaks on the main beach. If you are still learning, ask an instructor to carry the kit out past it and hand it to you. The beach gets busy with kiters, other watersports and tourists, so launch and land at one of the stations, where staff help with both. Jellyfish can be found in the warm water, though none are high risk, and a long rash vest and leggings prevent stings.

The nearest international airport is Ho Chi Minh City. A taxi takes around four hours and a bus about six. Work on the civil side of Phan Thiet Airport began on 27 April 2026, and its investor aims to open it in 2027. Mui Ne itself is a strip about 10 km long, and the main beaches are within walking distance of most places to stay.

Three schools carry most of the teaching. Surfpoint runs its kite and wing station beside Sea Horse Resort. C2Sky Kite Center, in Mui Ne since 2007, is an IKO and IWO school with two riding spots. Source Kiteboarding rents kite kit by the half day, day or week and wing kit by the half day or day. Beginners start on the main beach with a school; the wave spots are for confident riders.
