Le Morne

What it's actually like

Le Morne sits at the foot of Le Morne mountain on the west coast of Mauritius. Inside the reef is a shallow lagoon: knee to waist-deep standing water, with the waves breaking on the reef about 400 metres from the shore. ION Club gives the wind as east or south-east, lighter in the southern summer and stronger from April to October.

June to September is the season. In every one of those months more than half the days clear 12 knots for three daylight hours or more, and July is the pick, at about two in three. The mean over those rideable hours sits between 15 and 16 knots. Mornings start slower: in the season the share of windy days rises from about a third at eight in the morning to about half or more through the afternoon. January is the quietest month, at about one day in three. A July afternoon in the lagoon is usually powered up.

ION Club puts the reef about 600 metres out, and its centre says waves break on it about 400 metres from the shore.
