What it's actually like

Wingers, you share the lagoon with kiters and windsurfers, flat inside and sheltered by the point and Edward Island. The sea breeze fills in around midday, averaging 16 to 17 knots from October to March, and January is the pick. Bring your own kit.

Lancelin is a small fishing town on the Western Australian coast, about 130 kilometres north of Perth by Wanneroo Road, with giant white sand dunes behind it. Its lagoon sits between the mainland and Edward Island, sheltered by the point, with a reef outside and Lancelin Island offshore. The beaches were a windsurfing venue first, and the state kite association still calls it historically windsurfing orientated.

October to March is the season. Since 2017, more than eight days in ten in those months clear 12 knots for three daylight hours or more, and January tops it at more than nine in ten. It is a sea breeze: offshore in the morning, flipping around midday and filling in cross-onshore from the left, so the arvo, as locals call the afternoon, is your window. June is quietest, at just over half, with unpredictable onshore storm fronts. On a January afternoon the lagoon is properly lit.

KiteBud, a Perth kite school that does not teach here, rates the directions for the main beach. South is common on the hottest afternoons of January and February, often lighter and later. South-south-west is the usual summer afternoon wind around Perth and lets you get away from the beach and come back easily. A true south-west is ideal, but it comes only on occasion.

Kite and Wing WA, the state association, names three kite areas. Northpoint, opposite Lancelin Island, is flat water. The inside section at Edward Island, about 200 metres south of the windsurfing school, is flat too. South Passage, further downwind on the outer reef, is for expert kiters after big waves. Main Break, out the back of the lagoon through the passage, has left-handers over the reef. It is a windsurfing spot first, so kiters stay away when windsurfer numbers build.

The water is a mix of flat, chop and waves. Beyond the point near Edward Island is the Back Beach, with no reef and some shore break. You reach it along the beach or over the dunes from the car parks.

Most Lancelin beaches give you plenty of room to rig. In a four-wheel drive you can drive onto Northpoint and the beach 200 metres south of the sea rescue building, where the sand is mostly hard. Keep off seaweed and soft sand, which bog you down. No four-wheel drive? Park by the toilet blocks and walk 200 metres south to set up. The beach gets crowded at weekends and in the holidays.

Rules and safety. Do not launch or land kites on the grassed area next to the windsurfing school and the sea rescue building. Rangers issue fines there. Do not launch or land on the Back Beach. Stay clear of the windsurfing rigging and launching area. Keep a safe distance from beach users, fishers and windsurfers, and follow wave riding etiquette with other disciplines. Pack kites and lines away when not in use, because drivers cannot see a bar and lines in the sand. Neither kiteboarders nor windsurfers have right of way in all circumstances, so keep a good lookout. Beyond 400 metres from shore in unprotected waters you need a lifejacket of at least level 50S and a GPS-enabled EPIRB or PLB, both worn. Carry flares or an electronic visual distress signal. The reef sets the hazards. Inside the lagoon it comes up shallow at low tide. From Main Break, riding too far upwind puts you high on the reef. At South Passage the wind carries you into the channel if anything goes wrong, but on the far side of the passage there are rocks and Lancelin Island.

There are no kite schools or kite shops in Lancelin. In January 2026 a windsurf coaching group found no hire centre in town either, so bring all your kit and a repair kit, or hire in Perth. The town has a backpackers lodge 300 metres from the windsurfing, a couple of hotels and a campsite. Off the water you have the dunes, by four-wheel drive, tour or rented sandboard, and dolphins can turn up in the lagoon.
