What it's actually like
Meia Praia is a long, sandy beach about 3 km east of Lagos town centre, running out to the Alvor lagoon at its far end. The water off it is deep, so there is no wading over sandbars as there is on the lagoon. It works as two spots in one, depending on the season.
The record sees mostly the summer wind. July and August are the pick, with about half the days clearing 12 knots for three daylight hours or more; May and June sit at about a third. It is a late wind: in July almost nothing blows at eight in the morning, about one day in ten at one o’clock, and more than half the days at six in the evening. The mean over those rideable hours is about 14 knots. From October to March the record shows far fewer windy days, about one in five at best and in December only about one in twenty. A second model, ERA5, puts the share of rideable days 28.5 points higher here, and no weather station has settled it, so read every figure as a guide.
Windsurfing is not allowed in bathing areas within 100 metres of the beach, and windsurfers launching or landing there must use the marked corridors where they exist.
