What it's actually like

You get the north-west meltemi at 4 to 7 Beaufort, flat shallow water inside for beach starts and gybes, and small chop further out. Most windsurfers rig 4.5 to 5.3 metres, and July and August are the heart of it.

You will hear the meltemi before you see it, rattling the tamarisks behind the beach. It is the local word for the dry summer wind that comes down the Aegean from the north, and at Kouremenos it arrives with interest. The bay sits outside Palekastro in the far east of Crete. It is a long curve of sand and fine pebble, with olive groves behind and the red cliffs of Kastri at the south end. On a proper day a scatter of sails fills the blue.

The meltemi blows from the north-west here, and the local thermal and the funnelling add power on top. It runs at 4 to 7 Beaufort through the summer, side-shore from the left with a touch of offshore, in an enclosed bay. July and August are the heart of it, and October to December are the lightest months. Winter blows too, but the sea is cold and the centres are closed. Come between June and September and you will be out on most days.

Near the beach the water is flat and shallow over sand, perfect for beach starts and learning to gybe. The sandy launch shelves slowly and the shorebreak is slight at most. Push further out and you find small chop to launch off, where the chop hop crowd hangs out. Most people rig 4.5 to 5.3 metres in high summer, so if you are overpowered, come in and change down. The sea runs from about 16°C in late winter to 26°C in August.

Wingers have it good here. The flat water inside is made for first foil flights, and the steady wind means you are not pumping all day. Kiters, go in with your eyes open. There is no kite school on this beach, kiters launch further downwind of the windsurf centres, and the national kite rules are strict. This is a place for independent riders who know exactly what they are doing.

Rules and safety. Here windsurfing is prohibited in wind above 7 Beaufort or 61 km/h, before sunrise and after sunset. A windsurfer must wear a personal life jacket. Likewise kiting is prohibited in wind above 7 Beaufort or 61 km/h, in the dark, on crowded beaches and in limited visibility. Never kite with wind towards open sea and no motorboat cover, or more than one nautical mile offshore. Kiters wear a helmet, harness, line knife, quick release, leash and jacket-type life jacket, and a wetsuit from 15 October to 15 May. The wing foiling decision prohibits wing foiling by anyone under 18. It also prohibits wing foiling in rocky sea areas. The minimum water depth for wing foiling is 150 cm. Wing foilers must wear a helmet and a life jacket or impact vest. The launch lies inside two Natura 2000 sites. Rules can vary, so ask the centre and the local port authority before you ride.

The crew is mostly windsurfers and wingers, with the odd freestyler working on moves in the flat water inside. The north end, Tenta, is quieter. The shore there is rocky and the little harbour is close, so give it a wide berth. In front of the centres the school has laid buoys to mark the way in and out, so use them. The fish come first, then the swimmers, and riders come last: that is how it works in this bay.

The centre's beach guidelines spell out the etiquette. Give way to every swimmer, snorkeller, diver and fisherman, and to beginners. The rider on starboard tack has right of way, and here that is the one sailing towards the beach. Look back every time you gybe. On the sand, leave your kit at least 2 metres from the water, and never leave a sail unattached to its board. Put the rig back in the shack if you stop for more than 20 minutes.

Gone Surfing, a small owner-run centre on the beach, teaches windsurfing and wing foiling on Duotone kit. It rents windsurf kit by the hour or the week, wings by the week, and stores your own gear. The first wing lesson runs three hours: an hour of wing control on the sand, then two hours on the foil. An instructor follows in a powerboat and coaches over a walkie-talkie system. October 2026 prices start windsurf rental at 45 euros an hour, and a week of wing kit is 400 euros.

When the wind drops, go up to Palekastro square, or find the little tavernas locals call rakadika, where the mezedes, small plates, come with raki. Sitia, down the road, is known for xerotigana, crisp pastry spirals with honey. Nights here are calm, not clubbing, and after a day on the water that suits everyone. Look at the sky over the hills before you rig and keep clear of the swimmers.

Getting there

Nearest airportSitia (JSH). About 15 minutes by car, with daily flights to Athens. Heraklion (HER) is the long way round, 147 km to Sitia.
