What it's actually like

You get the Big Lagoon: mostly flat water with large shallow sections. From May to September at least eight days in ten clear 12 knots. Several schools teach and hire kite gear, and booties handle the mussels.

Ayubowan, the Sri Lankan hello that means may you live long. Kalpitiya is a sandy peninsula on the north-west coast of Sri Lanka, with lagoons on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. The Big Lagoon, where most riders first get on the water, is roughly two kilometres long and one wide, with a narrow sandbank between it and the ocean.

Two monsoons give you two seasons at Kalpitiya. From May to September at least eight days in ten clear 12 knots for three daylight hours or more, and in June almost every day does. The average sits between 17 and 18 knots, and the wind keeps going from breakfast to evening. January and February are the second season, at about seven days in ten and lighter, around 14 knots. March, April and November are the flat spells, with fewer than four days in ten.

The Big Lagoon is mostly flat water with large shallow sections, so beginners have room to learn. Each school teaches in its own area, and independent riders get the wider lagoon. The water is waist-deep across most of Valampuri Resort’s teaching area. A Kappalady school owner who has lived in Sri Lanka for 30 years calls the lagoon challenging for beginners because of gusty conditions.

Kappalady Lagoon, about a 30-minute drive south, is a closed lagoon with a wide stretch of shallow, calm water and a school of its own, Kitekuda. About 300 metres across it you reach the ocean beach, with a beach break of two to five feet and two reefs further out. In winter the small Kandakuliya Lagoon, in front of Kitesurfing Lanka, works for independent riders.

Across the strip of land from Kandakuliya is the ocean side at Donkey Point, with chop and waves depending on the day. In summer the wind there is side-offshore and there is no rescue service on the ocean side, so it is for confident, independent riders. Summer is also the season for boat trips north to Vella Island, where a long sandbank gives very flat water and clean wind on its sheltered side.

Rules and safety. There is no published local rule on riding the lagoon. Kitesurfing Lanka keeps rescue boats at two key locations, and De Silva Windresort runs a boat service and rescue. There are spiky mussels, so wear booties. Stray dogs live in the village, so do not feed or pet them. After a scratch or bite, seek medical help at once because of the risk of rabies. The closest hospital with post-exposure treatment is in Negombo, 3.5 hours by road. In a medical emergency call 1990, the free island-wide ambulance service.

You will not miss the thick wetsuit, because the water stays warm through both seasons. The water runs 27 to 30°C all year, and a rashguard and sun protection are usually enough. Lessons run on radio links: De Silva’s instructors talk to students by walkie-talkie. Most complete beginners need 9 to 15 hours to ride confidently.

From Colombo’s airport it is around three to three and a half hours by road, and a car with a driver is the easiest way to get there with kit. Most of the bigger camps have their own restaurants and bars. Small local places serve rice and curry, kottu (chopped flatbread, stir-fried), hoppers and fresh fish.

On a flat day, winter mornings are the season for dolphin and whale watching and for dive trips to Bar Reef, between November and April. Wilpattu National Park, known for leopards, sloth bears and elephants, is close enough for a day safari, and the old Dutch fort is in Kalpitiya itself.
