What it's actually like

Jeri, as everyone here calls it, is a village of sand streets inside a national park, with the Duna do Pôr do Sol standing over the west end of the bay. I have ridden this bay every season, and the first gust that fills my sail each year still gets me buzzing. Steady trades, warm water, swell wrapping round the point, flat lagoons behind the dunes and a sunset that empties the water every evening.

The season runs August to January, with the trade blowing almost always from the east. September is the pick, nearly every day is rideable in our record, and October is barely behind. Mornings are gentle, time for coffee and a slow rig. Then it builds, and by mid afternoon it is properly cranking. That is when the bay fills with sails and everyone is hooning. Rig for the mean wind, not the biggest gust, and you will not end up stacked. The water sits at 26 to 28°C all year, so leave the wetsuit at home: boardshorts or a rash vest and plenty of sun cream.
