What it's actually like

Yalla! That is how we say let's go, and you will hear me shout it down the beach when the wind fills in. My spot is the lagoon at Al Ahyaa, on the north side of Hurghada on the road to El Gouna: turquoise water, a sandy bottom you can stand on for hundreds of metres, a reef outside keeping the open sea off, and a row of kite centres along the beach.

I teach here every season, and watching someone get up on the board for the first time in that warm, flat water still gives me the rush.

The guides put the season at May to October, most often 15 to 25 knots, with the odd day of 30 to 35 for the advanced crew.
