Fehmarn is a Baltic island off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein, joined to the mainland by the Fehmarnsund Bridge. Its coast faces every way, so there is a spot for almost every wind: Surf Magazin lists thirteen, from the shallow bays in the south and west to the waves on the north-west tip. What changes the day is the wind direction, the depth and the reserves that close parts of the shore.
WindChaser’s record here is a 9 km model corrected against DWD’s Fehmarn station at Westermarkelsdorf, on the north-west shore 9.5 km away. The check leaves too wide a margin in July, August, October, November and December, so those months show no figure. Of the months it publishes, January and February are the windiest, with seven days in ten clearing 12 knots for three daylight hours, and the mean over those rideable hours is about 18 knots. March to June and September sit between 53 and 61 in a hundred. The wind holds through the day in winter. A January session is a cold one.
Wulfener Hals and Katharinenhof in the south work from south-east round to south-west, and Orth has a standing area 150 metres wide.
70% of days clear 12 kt for three daylight hours or more.
In February the wind most often sits at 12 to 15 kt (24% of daylight hours) and is over 12 kt from 8am to 6pm on at least half the days. See both charts in the full report
