Cumbuco

What it's actually like

Bora pra água! It means let's get in the water. Cumbuco is a fishing village on a long sandy beach north-west of Fortaleza: more than six kilometres of sand, palms behind the beach, dunes behind the village, and from August a sky full of kites.

The trade blows from the east and east-south-east and hits the beach cross to cross-onshore from the right. The guides call the season July to January, but the record says August to November is the heart of it, and September is the pick, with nearly every day rideable. It is lighter first thing, properly filled in by about ten, then it holds through the afternoon. At the guides' 15 to 25 knots you are powered up for hours. To be honest about the quiet months, though: the record puts March and April right down, and they are not months to fly in for. Take those two figures as the model's word: the nearest station up the coast measured far more rideable hours than the model did this year, and until a meter goes in on this beach nobody can tell you which is right. No wetsuit either: the water sits at 26 to 28°C all year, so it is boardshorts or a rash vest.

When it gets busy

Crowds

Sep · Medium

In season you share the sky with hundreds of kites, and Lagoa do Cauípe is often packed by midday. November and December, with the holidays, are probably the busiest months. Come in September and it is usually much less crowded, just as the wind hits its peak in the record.
