No tide information found for the bay. Hours per tide state unknown until tide data arrives.

Tide data not yet available for this spot. The record holds wind, air and waves, not tide. Until a tide source is connected, the tables above stay empty rather than estimated. What the guide says about tide is on the next page, in words.

Ships, the waterski lane & the headland

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

Speed near people and vesselsThe bylaws treat windsurfers, wing sailors and kite surfers, and their foiling versions, as sailboards. No person may, without reasonable excuse, go faster than 5 knots through the water within 50 metres of any other vessel, floating structure or person in the water; within 200 metres of the shore or of any structure; within 200 metres of any vessel or floating structure flying flag A, the dive flag; or when knowingly or deliberately approaching within 200 metres of a marine mammal. Sailboards are exempt only from the limit within 200 metres of the shore or a structure. Every other part of the rule applies to them.
Waterski access laneA waterski access lane lies at the southern end of Worser Bay, about 100 metres wide and running 200 metres north-east from the water’s edge. It is marked on shore by pairs of orange posts with black horizontal bands and by a sign declaring its purpose, and may also be marked with orange buoys with vertical black stripes. When the lane is in use for waterskiing, nobody may enter, stay in or use it for anything else, or obstruct anyone using it.
Ships and ferriesThe harbour entrance lies just outside the bay. Every vessel under 500 gross tonnage must not impede the navigation of a vessel of 500 gross tonnage or more, and the entrance channel is a narrow channel under the maritime rules. A local windsurf guide for Seatoun warns riders to watch for ferries coming round the corner.
Lifejackets and wetsuitsThe lifejacket clauses of the bylaws do not apply to a sailboarder who wears a wetsuit at all times.
EmergenciesIn an emergency call 111 and ask for Police, or use VHF channel 16. For non-urgent help on the water, call Coastguard on *500.
Beyond the headlandA local windsurf guide for neighbouring Seatoun warns that Cook Strait is just around the corner if you break gear, and that once you clear the headland you are in line with Cook Strait: if you get into trouble there, swim, or you will drift out.
The shore and the wind line

Launch from the sand by the boating club and rig on the grass behind it. In a northerly the wind may not reach the shore, and a local wing guide says you may need to paddle out to the wind line. No written source describing the rocks along the shore was found: look at the launch from the beach first.

Ships, the waterski lane and the headland

The harbour entrance lies just outside the bay. Every vessel under 500 gross tonnage must not impede a vessel of 500 gross tonnage or more, and the entrance channel is a narrow channel. A waterski access lane runs 200 metres out from the southern end of the bay, marked by orange posts with black horizontal bands: keep out of it while it is in use for waterskiing. A local windsurf guide warns that past the headland a rider is in line with Cook Strait, and that a rider in trouble there should swim or will drift out.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

§WhatSourceLimit
01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from ECMWF IFS HRES at 9 km, cell 1.61 km from the spot, February 2017 to September 2026, 9 to 10 years a month, no station correction. A global grid at a harbour entrance: a guide, not a local measurement.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share.
01Direction, strength, when it blowsWrittenDirections from a local wing location guide and a local windsurf guide. Strength and time of day read from the record.
02The month’s recordsRecordNine to ten years a month. No anemometer within 10 km passed the screen, so no station check: treat the shares as a guide.
03Stays, schools and kitWrittenConfirmed on each business’s own website. One price band, from a published course price.
04Tide windowsMissingNo tide source in the pipeline. The section renders its empty state.
05Hazards, ships, the lane and the headlandWrittenSpeed, lifejacket, lane and shipping rules from the Wellington Regional Navigation Safety Bylaws 2021. Emergency numbers from Coastguard New Zealand. The headland warning from an undated local windsurf guide, not surveyed.
06Airports, access, packingWrittenRoad distance from OSRM routing. Water temperature from Greater Wellington’s Queens Wharf gauge in the inner harbour, about 5 km away, not at the bay. Water quality from Greater Wellington’s 2023/24 monitoring report, before the 2026 Moa Point incident. No kite sizes: no guide or school names a kite launch here.
MapsMissingNo drawn maps for this spot. No surveyed coordinates for the launch.

The record

Hourly wind, 2017 to 2026, from ECMWF IFS HRES via Open-Meteo: a 9 km grid, read at the cell 1.6 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over nine to ten years.

What we could not source for Wellington - Worser Bay

A crowd count, beyond the club’s racing and event dates. A water quality grade newer than Greater Wellington’s 2023/24 report: LAWA’s own grade page refused scripted reads, and no grade since the 2026 Moa Point incident was read. A first-hand reading of the local vibe. A water temperature measured at the bay: the figure is from Queens Wharf, in the inner harbour. Tide tables and per-launch tide windows. A station check on the wind record. A surveyed launch point. A current guide or school naming Worser Bay as a windsurf or kite launch (LAWA’s activity list tags kite surfing only). A written source for the rocks along the shore. A licensed photograph of riding at the bay.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
