Per-launch tide notes

Paal 17 sporting beach
Low—Mid—High—

At low water a rip can sometimes show as a stream running between the sandbanks. Hours per tide state unknown until tide data arrives.

Paal 28 to 32 sporting beach
Low—Mid—High—

No tide information found for this stretch. Look at it from the shore before launching.

Dijkmanshuizen, Wadden Sea
Low—Mid—High—

No source read gives the tide states that work here. Ask locally before launching.

Tide data not yet available for this spot. The record holds wind, air and waves, not tide. Until a tide source is connected, the tables above stay empty rather than estimated. What the guide says about tide is on the next page, in words.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

Where boards and kites may launchSailboards and surfboards, catamarans and similar craft may be brought onto or kept on the coast, from land or from the water, only on the recreational and sporting beaches. Kitesurfers may start and land only on those beaches, never on built-up beach by the pavilions, kiosks, water sports buildings and beach huts. While kitesurfing, keep enough distance from the beach, swimmers and other water sports users that no swimmer or other water sports user is hindered or put in danger. The zones are marked by the numbered beach posts with red tops.
Where kitesurfing is bannedThe municipality lists the sporting beaches as posts 17.60 to 18.99 and 28.20 to 32, keeping at least 50 metres from the lighthouse seawall. Kitesurfing is banned on the recreational beach between posts 32 and 33.02 and on built-up recreational beach. On the Wadden Sea it is allowed only at Dijkmanshuizen, from 1 April to 1 October.
Rip currents between the sandbanksThe tide and the waves push seawater towards the beach, and it flows back out to sea as a rip, a current running seaward. From the beach a rip is often hard to see: the water in it can look calmer, with fewer breaking waves and darker water than on either side. At low water a rip can sometimes show as a stream running between the sandbanks towards the sea. This is open North Sea, with surf, waves and current.
Lifeguards and emergenciesLifeguards staff eight posts from Paal 9 to Paal 28, including Paal 17, in weeks 28 to 35, from 10:00 to 18:00. In an emergency with no lifeguard nearby, call 112.
Offshore wind and the lighthouse currentAn east wind blows off this beach and out to sea: do not ride in it. Spot guides warn of strong current at the lighthouse, for advanced riders only.
Sandbanks and gullies

The beach is wide, with shallow gullies between the sandbanks and higher waves beyond them, so the depth changes as you cross a bank. At Dijkmanshuizen on the Wadden Sea a spot guide describes shallow, flat water with shells on the bottom: wear shoes.

Rip currents, the lighthouse and the zones

Seawater pushed towards the beach by the tide and the waves flows back out to sea as a rip, a current running seaward; at low water a rip can sometimes show as a stream running between the sandbanks. Spot guides warn of strong current at the lighthouse. Kitesurfing is allowed on the sporting beaches, posts 17.60 to 18.99 and 28.20 to 32, and on recreational beach with no buildings on it; it is banned from post 32 to 33.02, on built-up beach and within 50 metres of the lighthouse seawall.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

§WhatSourceLimit
01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from MET Norway Nordic (metno_nordic) at 1 km, cell 0.57 km from the spot, December 2022 to September 2026, 3 to 4 years a month (March 2023 dropped), no station correction.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share.

02The month’s recordsRecordThree to four years a month. No anemometer within 10 km passed the screen, so no station check: treat the shares as a guide.

The record

Hourly wind, 2022 to 2026, from MET Norway Nordic via Open-Meteo: a 1 km grid, read at the cell 0.6 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over three to four years.

What we could not source for Texel

A crowd count: the months above are compiled research. A bathing water classification, and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. Tide tables and per-launch tide windows. A station check on the wind record. Surveyed launch coordinates. A windsurf or wing school or rental on the island, and a wing launch named by anyone but the Round Texel organisers. The instrument behind the Dijkmanshuizen season, and how the Wadden Sea rule applies to other lesson spots. The ferry crossing time. A measured water temperature. A licensed photograph.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
