Los Lances Sur

The lagoon, summer zones & the Levante

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

EmergenciesIn an emergency call 112. It is free from mobile and fixed phones and reaches the ambulance, fire service and police.
The lagoonThe Junta de Andalucía’s Decree 262/2007 prohibits kitesurfing in the lagoon zone, and Tarifa’s municipal ordinance (article 61.7) prohibits any water sport in the coastal lagoon of Los Lances beach. The beach lies inside a protected natural site.
Summer zonesKite and Roll, a Tarifa school, says that from 15 June to 15 September Los Lances Sur is for bathers only, and that Los Lances Norte then has areas for kite schools, an area for independent riders and small areas for bathers. No municipal order for these zones has been read. Read the beach signs before rigging.
Levante offshore driftThe Levante blows from the east, side-offshore at Los Lances. A rider or a kite in trouble drifts away from the beach. The schools run rescue boats on Levante days. Do not ride alone in a strong Levante unless you can self-rescue.
Stones at the north endThe bottom mixes sand and stone at the far north end of the beach, and there are small stones in places elsewhere. Walk the entry before launching.
Stone at the north end

The beach is fine sand with small stones in places. At the far north end, towards Arte Vida, the bottom mixes sand and stone. Walk the entry before launching there.

The lagoon, the summer zones and the Levante

The Junta de Andalucía’s Decree 262/2007 prohibits kitesurfing in the lagoon zone, and Tarifa’s municipal ordinance (article 61.7) prohibits any water sport in the coastal lagoon of Los Lances beach. The schools say that from 15 June to 15 September Los Lances Sur is for bathers only, and Los Lances Norte has areas for kite schools and for independent riders. No municipal order for these zones has been read. The Levante blows from the east, side-offshore: a rider or kite in trouble drifts away from the beach. The schools run rescue boats on Levante days.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

§WhatSourceLimit
01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from icon_eu at 7 km, cell 1.99 km from the spot, December 2022 to September 2026, 3 to 4 years a month, no station correction.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share.
01Direction, strength, when it blowsWrittenDirection from school guides (Kite and Roll, Addict, Kite Fun Tarifa). Strength and time of day read from the record.
02The month’s recordsRecordThree to four years a month. ERA5 over the same window reads lower in every month, so treat the shares as a guide until a station check ships.
03Stays, schools and kitWrittenChecked on each business’s own website or a named rider source, and stays also on Google, most recently on 30 September 2026. Price bands only where a price is published.
04Tide windowsMissingNo tide source in the pipeline. The section renders its empty state.
05The lagoon, summer zones, drift and stoneWrittenThe lagoon rules from Decree 262/2007 (Junta de Andalucía) and Tarifa Municipal Ordinance article 61.7, both as quoted on the Junta’s Los Lances page. Summer zones and physical hazards from school guides; the ordinance’s summer-zone article not read first hand.
06Airports, access, packing, kite sizesWrittenRoad distances from OSRM routing. Water temperature from compiled research, not measured. Sizes derived from the session mean.
MapsMissingNo drawn maps for this spot. No surveyed coordinates for the launches.

The record

Hourly wind, 2022 to 2026, from DWD ICON-EU via Open-Meteo: a 7 km grid, read at the cell 2.0 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over three to four years.

What we could not source for Tarifa, Los Lances

Crowds by month: no count exists for Los Lances yet. The municipal beach ordinance with the summer zone boundaries, read first hand. A water quality classification, and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. Tide tables and per-launch tide windows. A station check on the wind record. Surveyed launch coordinates. A measured water temperature. A licensed photograph.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
