Shallows, coral & centre zones

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

Centre zones and briefingThe CDWS audit protocol for water sports centres says the brochure centres give riders must cover using a flotation vest, which it calls mandatory for the activity, and staying within the area designated for the activity and shown on the map. Centres must also advise riders on the locations of reefs and rocks to avoid. Use your centre’s launch and zones and ask for the briefing.
Coral reefThe CDWS protocol lists damaging or breaking reefs or marine life among the violations centres must follow up. Do not stand on or ride over coral.
Side-offshore windThe wind blows side-offshore, so a rider who drops their kit drifts away from the beach. Ride where a centre has a rescue boat on the water.
ShallowsThe water along the shore is extensive and, at KBC, too shallow to kite or wing at first: riding starts a little further out. Check the depth before riding fast, jumping or foiling.
EmergenciesEgypt’s emergency numbers: ambulance 123, police 122, tourist police 126, fire 180.
Reefs and rocks

The CDWS protocol requires centres to advise riders on the locations of reefs and rocks to avoid, and lists damaging or breaking reefs or marine life as a violation. No source read maps the reefs in the bay: ask your centre before you ride, and never stand on coral.

Shallows, boats and the side-offshore wind

At KBC the water along the shore is so shallow that nobody can kite or wing there at first; training and riding start a little further out in deeper water, with boats in support. The wind blows side-offshore, and at Tornado Surf offshore from the north-west in the morning, so ride where a centre has a rescue boat on the water. The 7 Bft KiteHouse runs a boat to a spot at Tobia Island for riders at VDWS level 5 or IKO 3L and above.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

§WhatSourceLimit
01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from ECMWF IFS HRES at 9 km, cell 3.98 km from the spot, January 2017 to September 2026, 9 to 10 years a month, no station correction.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share.
01Direction, strength, when it blowsWrittenDirection from the centres’ own websites (KBC, Tornado Surf, Duotone Pro Center, 7 Bft). Strength and time of day read from the record.
02The month’s recordsRecordA coarse 9 km model, not checked against a station or an independent model. Treat the shares as a guide.
03Stays, centres and kitWrittenConfirmed on each centre’s own website, re-read on 27 September 2026. Surfmotion could not be read in full, so it is not listed. Two resorts, the Robinson Club with its windsurf centre among them, added on 30 September 2026 from their own sites and Google listings. No price bands. The record

Hourly wind, 2017 to 2026, from ECMWF IFS HRES via Open-Meteo: a 9 km grid, read at the cell 4.0 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over nine to ten years.

What we could not source for Soma Bay

Crowds by month: no count exists for Soma Bay yet. Whether the bay lies inside a marine protected area, and any Red Sea Governorate rule for wind sports. A windsurf centre confirmed in full (Surfmotion, the Robinson Club centre). Surveyed launch coordinates for the four centres. The resort hotels read on their own pages for the Stays tab. A water quality classification, a measured water temperature and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. Tide tables and per-launch tide windows. A station check on the wind record. Guide photographs. Where any of these is missing above, the section says so rather than filling itself.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
