What it's actually like

Five kilometres out the Barna Road from Galway, Rusheen Bay is my bay, and I will tell anyone who stands still long enough. It is a shallow, sheltered inlet, almost enclosed, with a low peninsula of drumlins and Silverstrand between us and the open water of Galway Bay. Flat water, Atlantic wind, and a proper rush when it fills in.

This is an Atlantic weather spot, not a sea breeze spot. The wind comes in with the weather systems, mostly from somewhere between south and west, and on any one day it can peak at any hour, so I watch the forecast rather than the clock. It can be gusty, and in our record the gusts run far above the mean in every month, so check both before you rig and size down when it builds. Get it right and you are planing out towards Blake's Hill with spray coming off the rail, and that first run of the day is the reason I keep coming back.

In February the sea is about 10°C, so don't hang about: you learn to get into a damp wetsuit in seconds.

Summer is the busy season, June to August, when the summer camps, lessons and rentals all overlap. The centre shuts from mid November to mid April, and then it is a quiet bay and whoever checked the forecast.
