Greek rules, the kite zone & offshore drift

EmergenciesIn an emergency call 112. It is free from mobile and fixed phones and reaches the ambulance, fire service and police.
Kitesurf rulesThe kitesurfing decision requires a helmet, harness, line knife, quick release, leash and buoyancy jacket. Launch only with no people or obstacles within 100 metres. Kiting is prohibited before sunrise and after sunset, within 200 metres of anchored ships, rocks, reefs and moving boats, within 200 metres of the point swimmers usually reach where the water is not buoyed, within 100 metres of the outer swimming buoys, more than one nautical mile from the shore, and when the wind blows towards open sea with no motorboat cover. As amended by General Port Regulation No. 20, kiting is prohibited in wind above 7 Beaufort or 61 km/h.
Windsurf rulesGeneral Port Regulation No. 20 prohibits windsurfing in wind above 7 Beaufort, before sunrise and after sunset, within 200 metres of the point swimmers usually reach where the water is not buoyed, and within 100 metres of the outer swimming buoys. Windsurfers must wear a personal buoyancy aid.
Kite zone on the flat sideGuides disagree. One says kitesurfing has been forbidden on the flat-water side and is permitted on the wave side, and that the port police enforce it with a boat and issue tickets. Another says kites are kept to one part of the bay. No port authority order for the zone has been read. Ask a centre before rigging on the flat side.
Offshore on the flat sideThe Meltemi is side-offshore on the flat-water side: a rider or kite in trouble drifts away from the beach. One guide says there is no rescue boat on that side for independent riders. The centres run safety boats for their own customers.
The spit and the shorebreak

The spit is sand on both sides. On strong days the wave side has waves from waist to mast high and a shorebreak. The kitesurfing decision prohibits kiting within 200 metres of rocks and reefs.

Offshore on the flat side, and the kite zone

The Meltemi is side-offshore on the flat-water side: a rider or kite in trouble drifts away from the beach. One guide says there is no rescue boat on that side for independent riders; the centres run safety boats for their customers. Guides disagree on the kite zone there: one says kitesurfing is forbidden on the flat side and enforced by the port police, another that kites are kept to one part of the bay. Ask a centre before rigging.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

§WhatSourceLimit
01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from icon_eu at 7 km, cell 1.73 km from the spot, December 2022 to September 2026, 3 to 4 years a month, no station correction.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share.
01Direction, strength, when it blowsWrittenDirection from Windsurf Magazine and the centres. Strength and time of day read from the record.
02The month’s recordsRecordThree to four years a month. ERA5 over the same window reads much lower in summer, so treat the shares as a guide until a station check ships.
03Stays, schools and kitWrittenChecked on each business’s own website or a named rider source, most recently on 27 September 2026. Price bands only where a price is published.
04Tide windowsMissingNo tide source in the pipeline. The section renders its empty state.
05Rules, the kite zone, driftWrittenRules from the kitesurfing decision and General Port Regulation No. 20, read first hand. No local port regulation found: the kite zone is reported from guides that disagree.
06Airports, access, packing, kite sizesWrittenRoad distance from OSRM routing. Water temperature from compiled research, not measured. Sizes derived from the session mean.
MapsMissingNo drawn maps for this spot. No surveyed coordinates for the launches.

The record

Hourly wind, 2022 to 2026, from DWD ICON-EU via Open-Meteo: a 7 km grid, read at the cell 1.7 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over three to four years.

What we could not source for Prasonisi

Crowds by month: no count exists for Prasonisi yet. The local port regulation that sets the kite zone. A water quality classification, and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. Tide information. A station check on the wind record. Surveyed launch coordinates. A stay with its own website. A measured water temperature. A licensed photograph.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
