Greek rules, chop & crowds

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

EmergenciesIn an emergency call 112. It is free from mobile and fixed phones and reaches the ambulance, fire service and police.
The ferry portThe Antiparos ferry runs from the port at Pounda, a short walk from the kite beach. The kitesurfing decision prohibits kiting inside harbours and keeps the riding area at least one nautical mile from harbour entrances, unless the port committee reduces that to no less than 500 metres. Ask the schools which water is open near the port.
Kitesurf rulesThe kitesurfing decision requires a helmet, harness, line knife, quick release, leash and buoyancy jacket. Launch only with no people or obstacles within 100 metres. Kiting is prohibited before sunrise and after sunset, within 200 metres of anchored ships, rocks, reefs and moving boats, within 200 metres of the point swimmers usually reach where the water is not buoyed, more than one nautical mile from the shore, and when the wind blows towards open sea with no motorboat cover. As amended by General Port Regulation No. 20, kiting is prohibited in wind above 7 Beaufort or 61 km/h.
Windsurf rulesGeneral Port Regulation No. 20 prohibits windsurfing in wind above 7 Beaufort, before sunrise and after sunset, within 200 metres of the point swimmers usually reach where the water is not buoyed, and within 100 metres of the outer swimming buoys. Windsurfers must wear a personal buoyancy aid.
Chop, gusts and crowdsIn stronger wind the channel is very choppy with strong gusts. In July and August the water is crowded, mostly with students. The water is shallow a long way out: take care jumping near the shore.
Shallow water and the ferry port

The shoreline is long and shallow with a sandy bottom: a fall or a jump near the shore lands in shallow water. The Antiparos ferry port is a short walk from the kite beach. The kitesurfing decision prohibits kiting inside harbours and keeps the riding area at least one nautical mile from harbour entrances unless the port committee reduces that to no less than 500 metres. Ask the schools which water is open near the port.

Chop, gusts and the crowd

In stronger wind the channel is very choppy with strong gusts. The ferry to Antiparos crosses about every 45 minutes. In July and August the water is crowded, mostly with students: ride upwind or downwind of the teaching zones and keep a wide berth.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

§WhatSourceLimit
01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from icon_eu at 7 km, cell 4.01 km from the spot, December 2022 to September 2026, 3 to 4 years a month, no station correction. The cell is 4 km away: a guide, not a beach reading.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share.
01Direction, strength, when it blowsWrittenSide-shore Meltemi from the schools’ own pages. Strength and time of day read from the record.
02The month’s recordsRecordThree to four years a month. ERA5 over the same window reads higher in every month, so treat the shares as a guide until a station check ships.
03Stays, schools and kitWrittenChecked on each business’s own website or a named rider source, most recently on 27 September 2026. Price bands only where a price is published.
04Tide windowsMissingNo tide source in the pipeline. The section renders its empty state.
05Rules, the port, chop and crowdsWrittenRules from the kitesurfing decision and General Port Regulation No. 20, read first hand. No local port regulation for Pounda found. Chop and crowds from a spot guide.
06Airports, access, packing, kite sizesWrittenRoad distances from OSRM routing. Water temperature from compiled research, not measured. Sizes derived from the session mean.
MapsMissingNo drawn maps for this spot. No surveyed coordinates for the launch.

The record

Hourly wind, 2022 to 2026, from DWD ICON-EU via Open-Meteo: a 7 km grid, read at the cell 4.0 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over three to four years.

What we could not source for Pounda

Crowds by month: no count exists for Pounda yet. The local port regulation for the Pounda ferry port. A water quality classification, and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. Tide information. A station check on the wind record, whose cell is 4 km from the beach. A surveyed launch. A measured water temperature. A licensed photograph.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
