Launch notes

Langstrand Beach
Low—Mid—High—

No tide table in the pipeline. A windsurf spot guide says the underwater rocks by the cliff matter most at low tide.

Tide data not yet available for this spot. The record holds wind, air and waves, not tide. Until a tide source is connected, the tables above stay empty rather than estimated. What the guide says about tide is on the next page, in words.

Offshore wind, rocks & beach rules

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

EmergenciesIn an emergency call 112, the national emergency number. The NSRI emergency operations centre is on 087 094 9774.
Offshore south-easterThe main wind, the south-easter, blows offshore here and arrives in gusts from inland. A Cape Town kite school calls the conditions dangerous in it. An offshore wind carries a rider or dropped kit away from the beach. A windsurf spot guide notes that the wind often turns from south to south-east later in the afternoon.
RocksUnderwater rocks lie within about 20 m of the cliff by the Langstrand Road car park and matter most at low tide: keep at least 20 m from the cliff going out and coming in. A kite spot listing also notes rocks in part of the bay. No source maps them.
Municipal beach rulesUnder the Saldanha Bay Municipality Public Amenities By-law, 2022, the municipality may decide whether kite flying, windsurfing and kitesurfing may take place on a beach under its control, and may show what is allowed or prohibited on a notice board at the entrance. An activity against such a notice is an offence. Read any notice board before launching. No notice for Langstrand Beach was found.
Cape Columbine Nature ReserveInside the reserve at Tietiesbaai: no pets, a 20 km/h speed limit, no vehicles on the beach, no rubber ducks may be launched in Tietiesbaai, and entrance is at your own risk. The reserve is about 5 km from Paternoster.
Rocks by the cliff

A windsurf spot guide places underwater rocks within about 20 m of the cliff by the car park off Langstrand Road, and says they matter most at low tide: keep at least 20 m from the cliff going out and coming in. A kite spot listing also notes rocks in part of the bay. No source maps them.

The offshore south-easter and the rules

The main wind, the south-easter, blows offshore here and arrives in gusts from inland. A Cape Town kite school calls the conditions dangerous in it, and an offshore wind carries a rider or dropped kit away from the beach. A windsurf spot guide notes that the wind often turns from south to south-east later in the afternoon. Under the Saldanha Bay Municipality Public Amenities By-law, 2022, a notice board at a beach entrance may allow or prohibit kite flying, windsurfing and kitesurfing, and an activity against it is an offence; no notice for Langstrand Beach was found. The Cape Columbine Nature Reserve at Tietiesbaai, about 5 km away, bans vehicles on the beach and the launching of rubber ducks in Tietiesbaai. In an emergency call 112; the NSRI emergency operations centre is on 087 094 9774.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

The record

Hourly wind, 2017 to 2026, from ECMWF IFS HRES via Open-Meteo: a 9 km grid, read at the cell 4.3 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over nine to ten years.

What we could not source for Paternoster

A surveyed launch position and a map of the rocks. A notice board or rule specific to Langstrand Beach. A school or hire. Crowds by month. A price for the current season (the rates read run to July 2026), a water quality classification and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. Tide tables. A station check on the wind record. A water temperature. Licensed photographs of riders. Where any of these is missing above, the section says so rather than filling itself.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
