Hour-by-hour & month-by-month wind

Rideable-day share by month, all three sports

Share of days with three or more daylight hours over each sport's threshold, counted from the record at 12 kt, Windsurf 13 kt and Wing 12 kt. Kahului has been checked against the model at 12 kn only, so the 13 kn Windsurf figure is counted but not checked against it.

Reef, the Weird Wave & the airport limits

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

Swimming zones and the 11am ruleSwimming zones A, B and C are for swimming only: no vessel or sailboard inside them. No sailboard may launch from Kanaha Beach Park before 11am. Windsurfing lessons and beginners may use the water within 300 feet of the shore between zones A and B after 9am.
Airport limits for kitesKahului Airport is next to the park. The Maui Kitesurf Community publishes the terms of the FAA waiver for kiting here: kiting only between official sunrise and sunset, no kite more than 125 feet above sea level, and no kiting in the corridor 2 nautical miles long and 1 nautical mile wide off the end of the runway. Its own safe riding guidelines add no riding before 11am.
Reef and the Weird WaveSharp coral reef and rocks lie offshore, most exposed at low tide. In the Weird Wave area between Lowers and Uppers the waves break unexpectedly. Currents are stronger around the reef and the wave zones.
Fishing lines and swimmersFishing lines and poles are in the water, and swimmers and paddlers share it. Keep clear of them.
Lifeguards and emergenciesThe lifeguard tower is staffed from 8am to 4:45pm every day. When no lifeguard is in the tower, call 911.
The reef

Sharp coral reef and rocks lie offshore, most exposed at low tide. In the Weird Wave area between Lowers and Uppers the waves break unexpectedly. Keep clear of the reef when you fall, and look at it from the shore before you launch.

Currents, swimming zones and the airport

Currents are stronger around the reef and the wave zones. Swimming zones A, B and C are for swimming only, and no sailboard may launch before 11am. Under the FAA waiver, kites fly only between official sunrise and sunset, stay below 125 feet above sea level and keep out of the corridor off the end of the Kahului runway. The Maui Kitesurf Community’s safe riding guidelines add no riding before 11am.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

§WhatSourceLimit
01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from ecmwf_ifs at 9 km, cell 4.83 km from the spot, January 2017 to September 2026, 10 years a month, corrected by month and hour against the Kahului station 1.32 km away. June to August only: the other nine months are withheld, their error out of sample over 10 points.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share.
01Direction, strength, when it blowsWrittenDirection from a spot guide (Kite Insider). Strength and time of day read from the record.
02The month’s recordsRecordA 9 km global model nearly 5 km from the spot, checked against the Kahului station. Only June to August held within the check, so no share shows for the other nine months.
03Stays, schools and kitWrittenChecked on each business’s own website or a named rider source, most recently on 27 September 2026. Price bands only where a price is published.
04Tide windowsMissingNo tide source in the pipeline. The section renders its empty state.
05Rules, reef and the airportWrittenSwimming zones and the 11am sailboard rule from HAR §13-256-130. The FAA waiver terms (sunrise to sunset, 125 feet, the runway corridor) and the 11am start from the community’s own safe riding guidelines, both as published by the Maui Kitesurf Community; the FAA’s own text not read. Reef hazards from a spot guide.
06Airports, access, packing, kite sizesWrittenAirport from the State of Hawaii. Lifeguard hours from Hawaii Ocean Safety. Water temperature from compiled research, not measured. Sizes derived from the session mean.
MapsMissingNo drawn maps for this spot. No surveyed coordinates for the launches or the swimming zones.

The record

Hourly wind, 2017 to 2026, from ECMWF IFS HRES via Open-Meteo: a 9 km grid, read at the cell 4.8 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over nine to ten years.

What we could not source for Kanaha

Crowds by month: no count exists for Kanaha yet. A water quality classification, and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. Tide tables and per-launch tide windows. The FAA’s own text for the kite terms. Wind figures for September to May, which the Kahului station check withholds. Surveyed launch coordinates. A measured water temperature. A licensed photograph.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
