Hour-by-hour & month-by-month wind

Rideable-day share by month, all three sports

Share of days with three or more daylight hours over each sport's threshold, counted from the record at 12 kt, Windsurf 13 kt and Wing 12 kt. Hvide Sande has been checked against the model at 12 kn only, so the 13 kn Windsurf figure is counted but not checked against it.

Wind directionW to SWThe fjord spots work in almost every direction except north and north-west; the mole needs a strong north to north-westerly.
Wind strengthAbout 19 ktThe mean over rideable daylight hours in October, November and January, checked against DMI’s Hvide Sande station.
When it blowsAll dayIn the months the record publishes, the share of windy days barely moves from 8am to 6pm.

Rideable hours, not all hours. Every wind figure in this report is the mean over hours above the threshold.

The mole current & the reserve

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

Wildlife reserveRingkøbing Fjord is a protected wildlife reserve. The protection limits hunting and access, including sailing. Check the reserve zones and the signs before you launch.
EmergenciesIn an emergency at sea call 112, which reaches the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.
Current at the moleThe strong current at the mole can be life-threatening. The current near the piers often runs out to sea. Advanced riders only.
Nets and people on the fjordWatch for fishing nets, bathers, dogs, children and onshore winds on the fjord. Very shallow patches near the shore.
Cold waterThe water is around 5 to 15°C from September to February. A 5/4 with hood, gloves and boots is the guide from October to May.
Shallows, shells and weed

The fjord is very shallow near the shore in places. Skaven has stones and sharp shells at the entrance: wear shoes. Sea grass and weed grow at some fjord spots, so a weed fin is worth packing.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

§WhatSourceLimit
01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from metno_nordic at 1 km, cell 0.31 km from the spot, December 2022 to September 2026, 3 to 4 years a month, checked against DMI’s Hvide Sande station 1.06 km away, which needed no correction. February, April, May, July, August, September and December are withheld: their error out of sample is over 10 points.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share.
01Direction, strength, when it blowsWrittenDirections from Surf Magazin, Westwind and Unplug. Strength and time of day read from the record.
02The month’s recordsRecordThree to four years a month, checked against the DMI station. Seven months held too wide a margin, so no share shows for them.
03Stays, schools and kitWrittenChecked on each business’s own website or a named rider source, most recently on 27 September 2026. Price bands only where a price is published.
04Tide windowsMissingNo tide source in the pipeline. The fjord has no tide windows in the sources read.
05Hazards, the mole and the reserveWrittenReserve from the Danish environment agency, emergency number from the Danish Defence JRCC page. The reserve order itself and its zones were not read. Physical hazards from Surf Magazin and Westwind, not surveyed.
06Airports, access, packing, kite sizesWrittenAirport from compiled research. Water temperature and crowds from compiled research. Sizes derived from the session mean.
MapsMissingNo drawn maps for this spot. No surveyed coordinates for the launches.

The record

Hourly wind, 2022 to 2026, from MET Norway Nordic via Open-Meteo: a 1 km grid, read at the cell 0.3 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over three to four years.

What we could not source for Hvide Sande

The Ringkøbing Fjord reserve order and its zone map (the official register page did not render). A crowd count: the months above are compiled research. A bathing water classification, and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. A checked travel time from the airport. Figures for the seven months the station check could not hold. Surveyed launch coordinates, and a wing launch named by a school. A measured water temperature.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
