Groynes, sections & the beach rules

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

Rock groynesRock groynes divide the beach, close together. Riders have to sail round them to reach open water. Keep clear of them, above all when waves are breaking on the sandbar.
Surfing and bathing sectionsThe municipal beach map marks where surfing is allowed, sections where surfing is allowed only from 1 September to 30 May, the bathing sections and an area for kites on the dike. Keep to the surfing sections and clear of bathers.
Car park rulesThe municipality prohibits steerable kites (Lenkdrachen), drones, tents, fires and horses on the car park. Rig on the grass strip in front of the beach, not on the car park.
Dunes and overnight staysWalking on the dunes and the dune grass is prohibited to protect the coast and nature. Use the paths at the main access points. Camping and sleeping in cars are not permitted on the car park.
No cover in winterDLRG lifeguards are on the beach from June to August, and spot guides say the school sets up for the summer months. The windiest months, October to February, have neither.
Emergencies at seaIn an emergency at sea call 112 and ask for MRCC Bremen, or call +49 421 536 87 0. From a German mobile network near the coast, 124 124 also reaches MRCC Bremen; it is a network operators’ service number, not an emergency number. VHF channel 16, Bremen Rescue.
Rock groynes and the sandbar

Rock groynes divide the beach, close together, and riders have to sail round them to reach open water. From about force 5 in westerlies and easterlies, small waves break on the sandbar offshore. Keep clear of the groynes, above all when waves are breaking. North-westerlies and north-easterlies are noticeably choppier.

Sections, the car park and cover

The municipal beach map marks where surfing is allowed, sections where surfing is allowed only from 1 September to 30 May, the bathing sections and an area for kites on the dike. Steerable kites (Lenkdrachen), drones, tents, fires and horses are prohibited on the car park, and the dunes are closed. DLRG lifeguards work from June to August at groyne 10; from October to February there is no cover. In an emergency at sea call 112 and ask for MRCC Bremen.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from metno_nordic (MET Norway Nordic) at 1 km, cell 0.43 km from the spot, December 2022 to September 2026, 3 to 4 years a month, no station correction.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share.

The record

Hourly wind, 2022 to 2026, from MET Norway Nordic via Open-Meteo: a 1 km grid, read at the cell 0.4 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over three to four years.

What we could not source for Heidkate

Crowds by month. The municipality’s parking tariff. The state bathing water classification for Heidkate, and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. A water temperature. Tide information. A station check on the wind record. Surveyed launch coordinates. A licensed photograph of riding at Heidkate. Where any of these is missing above, the section says so rather than filling itself.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
