Per-launch tide notes

Plage des Chalets
Low—Mid—High—

A spot guide says the water is standable at both high and low tide. Hours per tide state unknown until tide data arrives.

La Vieille Nouvelle
Low—Mid—High—

No tide information from a source used here.

Étang de Mateille
Low—Mid—High—

A lagoon, not the sea beach of the same name. No tide information from a source used here.

Tide data not yet available for this spot. The record holds wind, air and waves, not tide. Until a tide source is connected, the tables above stay empty rather than estimated. What the guide says about tide is on the next page, in words.

Offshore wind, the hire zone & the beach rules

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

Offshore TramontaneThe Tramontane blows side-offshore at Plage des Chalets and carries a rider or a dropped kite away from the beach, out to sea. A spot guide reserves it for independent riders and warns of Tramontane days over 40 knots. The same guide says rescue is provided during events or through the schools.
Vehicles on the beachDriving and parking motor vehicles on the beaches is banned under article L.321-9 of the Code de l’environnement, except with a specific authorisation. A 2024 order of the Préfet de l’Aude made an exception for marked zones on the Mateilles and Vieille Nouvelle beaches from 15 June to 15 September 2024 only. No later order was found: check locally before driving onto a beach.
Hire zoneAkila says a navigation zone must be respected for all equipment hire. Ask for its limits before you launch.
Flags and other usersThe town asks beach users to respect other users, the marked areas and the bathing flags. Lifeguard posts stand on Plage des Chalets, Mateille and Les Ayguades, but they are not staffed all year: the tourist office listed them as closed on 27 September 2026.
EmergenciesIn an emergency call 112, the European emergency number, free from fixed and mobile phones.
Sand and depth

The bottom is sand with no obstacles, and a spot guide says the water stays standable at both high and low tide. The water is flat to choppy in the Tramontane, and east and south-east sea winds bring waves.

The offshore wind, the hire zone and vehicles

The Tramontane blows side-offshore at Plage des Chalets and carries a rider or a dropped kite away from the beach. A spot guide reserves it for independent riders, warns of days over 40 knots, and says rescue is provided during events or through the schools. Akila says a navigation zone must be respected for all equipment hire. Driving and parking motor vehicles on the beaches is banned under article L.321-9 of the Code de l’environnement; a 2024 order of the Préfet de l’Aude allowed it only in marked zones on the Mateilles and Vieille Nouvelle beaches, from 15 June to 15 September 2024. No later order was found.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

§WhatSourceLimit
01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from meteofrance_arome_france_hd at 1.5 km, cell 0.55 km from the spot, December 2022 to September 2026, 3 to 4 years a month, no station correction.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share.
01Direction, strength, when it blowsWrittenDirection from the tourist office, Akila and spot guides. Strength and time of day read from the record.
02The month’s recordsRecordThree to four years a month from a 1.5 km model, not a station. Treat the shares as a guide until a station check ships.
03Stays, schools and kitWrittenConfirmed on each business’s own website or the tourist office’s pages. One price band, from Hôtel de la Plage’s published room prices; no lesson or hire price is published.
04Tide windowsMissingNo tide source in the pipeline. The section renders its empty state.
05Hazards, the offshore wind and the rulesWrittenVehicle rule from the Préfet de l’Aude’s 2024 order, the one the tourist office links; the town’s beach advice; physical hazards from spot guides. No municipal nautical order read.
06Airports, access, packing, kite sizesWrittenRoad distances from a routing engine; train, taxi and bus from the tourist office. Water temperature from compiled research, not measured. Sizes derived from the session mean.
MapsMissingNo drawn maps for this spot. No surveyed coordinates for the launches.

The record

Hourly wind, 2022 to 2026, from Météo-France AROME France HD via Open-Meteo: a 1.5 km grid, read at the cell 0.6 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over three to four years.

What we could not source for Gruissan

Gruissan’s municipal beach and nautical order (zones and corridors), and the current vehicle order for 2026. A counted crowd reading outside the Défi. Published lesson or hire prices (the cost tier rests on the hotel’s room prices). A water quality classification and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. The lifeguard season. Tide tables and per-launch tide windows. A station check on the wind record. Surveyed launch coordinates. A licensed photograph of Plage des Chalets, and a listing photo for the motorhome area. Where any of these is missing above, the section says so rather than filling itself.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
