Per-launch tide notes

Tombstones
Low—Mid—High—

Mid to high tide. At low tide the reef is exposed; at high tide the launch beach can disappear.

Gnaraloo Bay
Low—Mid—High—

Very shallow at low tide and covered in coral. Hours per tide state unknown until tide data arrives.

Tide data not yet available for this spot. The record holds wind, air and waves, not tide. Until a tide source is connected, the tables above stay empty rather than estimated. What the guide says about tide is on the next page, in words.

The reef, the lagoon & the station’s rules

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

Shallow, sharp reefThe wave at Tombstones can be massive and the reef is shallow and sharp; the station says people do get hurt. At low tide the reef is exposed. Experienced riders only, at mid to high tide.
No kiting at 3 Mile LagoonKitesurfing is not allowed at the 3 Mile Lagoon. The station says an exit there is a last resort only, if the wind drops or the kite has a problem.
Gnaraloo BayThe typical south wind can be a bit offshore at Gnaraloo Bay, and the station says it only works safely with a lot of west in it. Coral lies shallow at low tide, and boats return to the ramp in the afternoon. The waves about 100 m out are only for riders confident with self-rescue and long swims. To the left of the boat ramp is the reserve, where it is illegal to fish or use powered craft.
Vehicles, dunes and beachesNo vehicle, including four-wheel drives, bikes and quad bikes, may be driven in the dune system or on the beaches. Tracks signed "Station use only" are strictly for station staff.
Remote: water, fuel and heatGnaraloo is at the end of the road, with 75 km unsealed. Carry water and fill up with fuel in Carnarvon; the station holds limited stocks. Check the road with the Shire of Carnarvon and Main Roads. From January to March expect 30 to 40°C.
EmergenciesIn an emergency call 000. The Department of Transport’s marine safety hotline is 13 11 56.
The reef at Tombstones and in the bay

The Tombstones wave can be massive and the reef is shallow and sharp; the station says people do get hurt. At low tide the reef is exposed, and the ideal conditions are mid to high tide in a south-south-easterly. The launch beach is small, with plenty of sharp stone and shingle, and it can disappear at high tide or after heavy seas. At Gnaraloo Bay the flat water round the corner from the boat ramp is very shallow at low tide and covered in coral; the waves about 100 m out are only for riders confident with self-rescue and long swims. Wear booties.

The lagoon, the reserve and the wind

Kitesurfing is not allowed at the 3 Mile Lagoon: an exit there is a last resort only, if the wind drops or the kite has a problem. To the left of the Gnaraloo Bay boat ramp is the reserve, where it is illegal to fish or use powered craft, and boats return to the ramp in the afternoon. The typical south wind can be a bit offshore at the bay, which the station says only works safely with a lot of west in it. No rescue service is named by any source. In an emergency call 000.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from ecmwf_ifs (ECMWF IFS HRES) at 9 km, cell 4.48 km from the spot, February 2017 to September 2026, 9 to 10 years a month, no station correction.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share.

The record

Hourly wind, 2017 to 2026, from ECMWF IFS HRES via Open-Meteo: a 9 km grid, read at the cell 4.5 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over nine to ten years.

What we could not source for Gnaraloo

Crowds by month. The Ningaloo Marine Park zoning for Gnaraloo Bay, read in the instrument itself. Any school, hire or rescue service. A water temperature. A water quality classification, and a first-hand reading of the local vibe. Tide tables and per-launch tide windows. A station check on the wind record. Surveyed launch coordinates. A licensed photograph of Tombstones. Where any of these is missing above, the section says so rather than filling itself.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
