Per-launch tide notes

Steamer Point
Low—Mid—High—

The spot guides read describe Avon Beach, just to the west, where sandbanks dry at low tide and the incoming tide, nearer high water, is favoured. Hours per tide state unknown until tide data arrives.

Avon Beach
Low—Mid—High—

Moving sandbanks and a tidal current along the shore. Hours per tide state unknown until tide data arrives.

Tide data not yet available for this spot. The record holds wind, air and waves, not tide. Until a tide source is connected, the tables above stay empty rather than estimated. What the guide says about tide is on the next page, in words.

Sandbanks, currents & bathing zones

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

Bathing zonesMost of Friars Cliff beach is designated for bathing. Launch and ride from the water sports area in front of the concrete wave wall at the eastern end. At Avon Beach the area directly in front of the car park is allocated for water sports.
Sandbanks at low tideOff Avon Beach the sandbanks move around constantly and dry at low tide, and the sea floor along this stretch is shallow. A fin can strike a bar in shallow water. Check the tide before you launch.
Tidal currentA tidal current runs parallel to the beach. Allow for drift along the shore when you go out and come back in.
Harbour channel trafficPleasure craft use the buoyed channel into Christchurch Harbour. Keep clear of the channel and of boats using it.
Offshore in the best windThe best direction, west-south-west, is slightly offshore here. A wind blowing off the beach carries a rider or dropped kit away from the shore.
EmergenciesIn an emergency at the coast call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
Moving sandbanks

Off Avon Beach the sandbanks move around constantly and dry at low tide, and an older guide warns that the sea floor is shallow along this stretch, with sand bars that can snap a fin. Do not assume a line that was clear at high water is clear at low water.

Current, the harbour channel and the bathing zone

A tidal current runs parallel to the beach. Pleasure craft use the buoyed channel into Christchurch Harbour. Most of Friars Cliff beach is designated for bathing: launch only from the water sports area at the eastern end, or in front of the Avon Beach car park.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

§WhatSourceLimit
01Kite month sharesRecordCounted at 12 kt for three daylight hours from Meteo-France AROME France HD at 1.5 km, cell 0.65 km from the spot, December 2022 to September 2026, 3 to 4 years a month, no station correction.
01Windsurf and Wing month sharesRecordCounted at 13 kt (Windsurf) and 12 kt (Wing) from the same series, by the same rule as the Kite share.
01Direction, strength, when it blowsWrittenDirection from spot guides (Windsurf Magazine, boards.co.uk 2012). Strength and time of day read from the record.
02The month’s recordsRecordERA5 over the same window reads 10.1 points higher and no station has settled it, so treat the shares as a guide.
03Stays, schools and kitWrittenOne business, ShoreSports at Mudeford Quay, confirmed on its own website with its published prices; it works on Christchurch Harbour, not the open bay. Four stays, two holiday parks, a hotel on the harbour and a cottage above Steamer Point, confirmed on their own websites and Google listings on 30 September 2026. The club and the 2012 school and shop sites do not resolve.
04Tide windowsMissingNo tide source in the pipeline. The section renders its empty state.
05Rules, sandbanks and currentsWrittenBathing and water sports zones from BCP Council’s beach pages; emergency number from HM Coastguard. Physical hazards from spot guides, one of them from 2012. No byelaw or harbour direction read.
06Airports, access, packingWrittenRoad distances from OSRM; car parks from BCP Council. No water temperature source.
MapsMissingNo drawn maps for this spot. No surveyed coordinates for the launches.

The record

Hourly wind, 2022 to 2026, from Météo-France AROME France HD via Open-Meteo: a 1.5 km grid, read at the cell 0.7 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over three to four years.

What we could not source for Christchurch, Steamer Point

Crowds by month: no count exists yet. A stay near the beach confirmed on its own website, a school or hire on the open bay rather than the harbour, and the local club confirmed first hand. A wing or kite source for this beach. A byelaw for water sports zoning, and any Christchurch Harbour direction on crossing the entrance. A first-hand reading of the local vibe. Tide tables and per-launch tide windows. A station check on the wind record. Surveyed launch coordinates. A water temperature. Guide photographs. Where any of these is missing above, the section says so rather than filling itself.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
