Per-launch tide windows

Brouwersdam 2, sea side
Low—Mid—High—

The Dutch kitesurf association notes hundreds of metres of beach at low tide. Which state suits which level is unknown until tide data arrives.

Zeil- en Surfcentrum, lake side
Low—Mid—High—

The Grevelingen is a lake behind the dam, fed with sea water through the sluice. No tide data is held for it.

Tide data not yet available for this spot. The record holds wind, air and waves, not tide. Until a tide source is connected, the tables above stay empty rather than estimated. What the guide says about tide is on the next page, in words.

Sandbanks, sluice & closed zones

Every hazard on the spot page, repeated here in full. Read this before you get wet.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.

No kitesurfing on the GrevelingenThe Grevelingen, the lake on the inland side of the dam, is a Natura 2000 area. Its access decision bans kitesurfing across the whole area all year, except in designated kite zones, and the zone is at the Grevelingendam, not here. Kitesurf on the North Sea side only.
Closed areas on the lakeThe same decision closes several parts of the Grevelingen to all access all year, including Kabbelaarsbank-oost, east of Port Zélande. Keep out of them on a board.
Beach zones on the Goeree-Overflakkee halfGoeree-Overflakkee bans windsurfing on its North Sea beach and the water directly along it between beach accesses 13a and 15. For kitesurfing, the written text of its beach decision bans it from beach access 9 all the way to the border with Schouwen-Duiveland, which includes the stretch by Natural High, while the map attached to the same decision shows kitesurfing allowed from access 15 to the border. Until the municipality settles which applies, follow the signs at the beach access and ask the association information point at Natural High or a school where to launch. The decision also keeps boats out of a 100 m strip from the low-water line, except rescue boats and boats heading straight to or from the slipway in the harbour on the sea side of the dam.
After dark, harbours and swimming areasThe local bylaws ban kitesurfing and windsurfing between sunset and sunrise, in harbours and locks and the approaches to them, and in a buoyed fairway when commercial shipping approaches. Schouwen-Duiveland also bans them in swimming areas that are cordoned off or marked. Know where the swimming buoys are before you launch.
Bollen van de Ooster rest areaOffshore to the north-west, the Bollen van de Ooster sandbanks are a Voordelta rest area for seals and birds. All activity is banned in a smaller summer area all year and in a larger winter area from 1 November to 1 April. The exceptions include canoeing, windsurfing and wave surfing in its north-eastern part. Kitesurfing is not one of them. Buoys and signed posts mark the boundaries.
Offshore wind and the sluiceThe Dutch kitesurf association lists north, north-west, west and south-west as the safe wind directions for the main beach. Winds from east round to south blow off the beach and out to sea. At the Schouwen end of the dam, sea water runs through the Brouwerssluis into the lake, and the sluice stands open almost all the time. Keep well clear of it.
Sandbanks and the rest area offshore

The Bollen van de Ooster sandbanks lie offshore to the north-west of the main beach. They are a Voordelta rest area for seals and birds: all activity is banned in a smaller area all year and in a larger area from 1 November to 1 April, with a few exceptions such as windsurfing in the north-eastern part. Kitesurfing is not among the exceptions. Buoys and signed posts mark the boundaries. Plan any downwind run to stay clear of them.

The sluice, harbours and swimming areas

At the Schouwen end of the dam, sea water runs through the Brouwerssluis into the Grevelingen, and the sluice stands open almost all the time. The bylaws of both municipalities ban kitesurfing and windsurfing in harbours, locks and their approaches, and Schouwen-Duiveland also bans them in swimming areas that are cordoned off or marked. Keep well clear of the sluice and learn where the swimming buoys are before you launch.

Sources, and their limits

Where each section of this report comes from. Record is measured. Modelled is computed by a formula because no measurement exists yet; it looks like data and is not. Written is WindChaser's editorial copy, compiled from the sources below.

The record

Hourly wind, 2022 to 2026, from Météo-France AROME France HD via Open-Meteo: a 1.5 km grid, read at the cell 0.2 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over three to four years.

What we could not source for Brouwersdam

Tide tables. A session wind mean for this spot. Windsurf and wing thresholds run through the hourly record. Surveyed launch positions, the exact line of the Goeree-Overflakkee kite zone near the municipal border, and where the kitefoil launch zone sits. Water temperature measured at the dam. Where any of these is missing above, the section says so rather than filling itself.

Conditions change. Check local rules and conditions before you ride.
