The bottom is seaweed-covered reef with pebbles, stones and coral in places; booties make the walk in and out much easier. Coral starts about 100 metres offshore and riders are asked to keep off it; yellow buoys mark the outer boundary of the riding area and are not to be crossed.
The wind blows offshore and is often gusty near the beach. Kite Insider says riders who cannot hold ground drift away from the beach and need a boat, which costs money and time. Rescue comes from the schools’ boats and jet-skis. Posted rules reported by Kite Insider allow kiting only before 10:00 and after 16:30; it says enforcement is inconsistent and no municipal ordinance confirming any time rule has been found. For an emergency at sea call the Coast Guard on 913.

The record
Hourly wind, 2017 to 2026, from ECMWF IFS HRES via Open-Meteo: a 9 km grid, read at the cell 3.8 km from the spot. It knows the wind over the cell, not the gust on the sand in front of you, and it knows the bearing, not the coastline: "side-onshore" is a rider's reading of the bearing. Each month is counted over nine to ten years.
